Abstract
This study investigates the application direction of ecological transformative education (ETE) within the 2022 revised curriculum introduced in schools. To achieve this, nine life science and earth science teachers actively involved in ETE practices were purposefully selected. Their perceptions, perspectives, and teaching and learning practices regarding ETE were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that teachers perceive students as having a tendency to limit their understanding of ecological and environmental science to academic concepts. Additionally, students often lack experiences related to ecology and environmental changes, making it challenging for them to empathize with the climate crisis. Teachers emphasized the necessity for students to learn the interdependence and coexistence between humans and ecosystems. They also highlighted that ETE should aim to foster ecological citizenship by connecting ecological and climate crisis topics to real-life practices. However, teachers noted limitations in implementing ETE within a single subject and recognized the need to explore evaluation methods for assessing ecological literacy to enhance ETE implementation. Based on these findings, the study provides three key implications for effectively practicing ETE in science education. First, providing students with continuous and concrete ecological and environmental experiences can serve as the starting point for fostering ecological literacy through science education. Second, institutional support, including encouragement for teachers to implement ETE and the development of appropriate evaluation methods, is essential for its successful integration into school practices. Finally, science education, with its strengths in diverse inquiry-based activities and direct inclusion of ecological knowledge, can play a leading role in implementing ETE within the 2022 revised curriculum.
