Abstract

Science is inherently characterized by uncertainty, arising from the limitations of current knowledge and the ever-evolving nature of scientific understanding. Acknowledging and addressing this uncertainty is essential for both scientific discourse and effective public communication. It is therefore crucial that students learn to comprehend and manage scientific uncertainty, as this fosters the development of critical reasoning skills, leading to more informed and rational decision-making. Such education encourages pluralistic perspectives, equipping students to tackle uncertain scientific problems more effectively. This study aims to explore and develop a comprehensive framework for classifying and addressing scientific uncertainty within the secondary school science curriculum. The goal is to create a practical classification system that can be applied to high school science inquiry experiments. Through an extensive literature review, the concept and various types of scientific uncertainty were examined, leading to the identification of three classification frameworks suitable for science education. To further refine these frameworks, a survey was conducted with 36 secondary science teachers to assess their understanding of uncertainty in high school science inquiry experiments. The survey results, combined with insights from the literature, informed the development of a robust classification framework tailored to high school science inquiry.
