Abstract
This study explored how teacher scaffolding enhances the quality of elementary students’ argumentation in small-group discussions. We examined how two teachers facilitated students’ argumentation while co-teaching a 5th-grade ecosystem unit we had developed, anchored around the question: “What would happen to the ecosystem if bees disappear?” We gathered video recordings of discourse from 12 small groups, each consisting of 3-4 students, across two 80-minute lessons. We then qualitatively analyzed the transcripts of the recordings to assess how student argumentation levels changed over time within each small group during each lesson and to identify teacher interventions that elevated these levels. We identified three patterns in how teacher scaffolding contributed to enhancing argumentation levels in small groups. First, the teachers enhanced student participation by acknowledging individual contributions and encouraging diverse perspectives. This scaffolding facilitated deeper engagement and helped students build upon each other’s ideas constructively. Second, the teachers guided students in reasoning about the mechanisms of the anchoring phenomenon through sequential questioning and by encouraging them to apply their learning throughout the unit. This scaffolding enabled students to better justify their claims and synthesize ideas into more refined arguments. Finally, the teachers promoted consensus-building by encouraging students to consider and align with their peers’ perspectives. This approach led to more active rebuttals, persuasive argumentation, and collective refinement of ideas as students worked toward consensus. These findings provide implications for supporting and studying students’ meaningful engagement in collaborative scientific practices.
