Abstract
In this study, responsive teaching (RT) was applied in an elementary science classroom for the ‘Strata and Fossils’ unit of the 2015 revised science curriculum, as part of the teacher’s action research. The primary data sources were audio recordings of the lessons and their transcripts. Additional materials, such as students’ work, survey results, and the teacher’s diary, were used as supplementary data sources. The data were analyzed to examine how the teacher pedagogically responded to different types of student resources related to the learning topics. First, it was revealed that the teacher utilized scientifically valid student resources as topics for whole-class discussions and posed chained questions to further explore the resources. Second, when student resources were scientifically invalid, the teacher asked for students’ pros and cons, requested persuasion and consensus-building, shared small-group discussion outcomes with the whole class, and challenged students’ ideas with questions and empirical evidence. Third, when students’ resources were insufficient from a scientific point of view, the teacher encouraged them to shift perspectives, reflect on missing elements, expand their existing conceptions, and provided epistemological resources to facilitate their activities.
