Abstract
This study aimed to develop and implement the evolutionary simulation board game Island of Evolution and its lesson program to enhance high school students’ understanding of evolution and motivation for learning biology. Island of Evolution was designed to teach key evolutionary concepts, including variation, inheritance, differential survival, and natural selection. The game, based on research cases emphasized in the 2022 revised curriculum, features the brown anole (Anolis sagrei) to reflect the probabilistic nature of natural selection and prevent teleological misconceptions. The three-session evolution lesson program incorporated simulation-based learning and the EIAG debriefing model. The study involved 50 third-year students from a general high school in G City, Gangwon Province, divided into a control group (lecture-based instruction) and an experimental group (board game-based instruction). Statistical analysis of pre- and post-tests and qualitative analysis of student reflections and group discussions showed that the board game-based instruction significantly improved conceptual understanding. Students with lower prior knowledge showed notable improvement, while those with higher prior knowledge demonstrated effective misconception correction. Intuitive learning through gameplay enhanced students’ ability to derive evolutionary principles. Proper rule adherence and active discussion during debriefing were key to correcting misconceptions. Additionally, students’ motivation varied significantly with game ranking, with competition and rewards positively influencing engagement. Higher-ranked students improved across all motivation factors, while lower-ranked students showed a decline in some areas, leading to modifications in game rewards and rules. Student reflections highlighted enjoyment and educational value, confirming Island of Evolution as an effective tool for enhancing conceptual understanding and learning motivation.
