Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine misalignment in scaffolding between teachers and students in elementary science classrooms and identify their causes. A qualitative case study was conducted with a third-grade class and their teacher at J Elementary School in Seoul. Surveys and interviews were used to compare the scaffolding factors valued by the teacher and students. Survey responses provided average scores for each scaffolding factor, while interviews revealed reasons for these preferences. Observations of ten science lessons were analyzed to identify misalignment in scaffolding during classroom interactions. Lesson transcripts were reviewed to extract instances where the teacher’s intentions and the students’ perceptions diverged. Follow-up interviews with the teacher and students, along with analysis of student task performance, provided insights into the causes and contexts of these misalignments. The findings revealed significant differences in scaffolding perceptions. Students prioritized emotional scaffolding, while the teacher focused more on procedural and metacognitive scaffolding. These differences caused misalignment categorized into four types: timing, form, level, and delivery method. The primary causes were the teacher’s underestimation of emotional scaffolding and insufficient responsiveness to student needs. These findings highlight the importance of aligning scaffolding strategies with student perceptions to enhance engagement and learning outcomes. This study provides practical insights for improving scaffolding practices and theoretical sensitivity to its dynamics in classroom contexts.
