By summarizing the rhymes, this paper got the rhyme groups ofevery drama first, and then got twelve rhyme groups altogether. Thetwelve rhyme groups and the rhymes in each group are very similar withthose of the dramas by another two dramatists of that time in Suzhou,and many phonetic features of the Suzhou dialect in the 16th centuryare revealed by the rhyme groups.
Abstract
Large number of drama works handed down from Ming dynasty areimportant materials for studying the history of Chinese phonology anddialects in Ming dynasty. This paper has an investigation on the rhymes of the four dramas by the dramatist Xu Zichang of the Ming Dynasty inSuzhou. By summarizing the rhymes, this paper got the rhyme groups ofevery drama first, and then got twelve rhyme groups altogether. Thetwelve rhyme groups and the rhymes in each group are very similar withthose of the dramas by another two dramatists of that time in Suzhou,and many phonetic features of the Suzhou dialect in the 16th centuryare revealed by the rhyme groups.
