Large number of drama works handed down from Ming dynasty have double values both on literature and on linguistics. This paper studied the rhymes of the 2 dramas by Gu Dadian, a dramatist in Suzhou in the mid-Ming dynasty, by summing up the rhymes in his dramas. By referring to modern Suzhou dialect and the discussion of some Ming and Qing drama theorists, this paper argues that though rhymes in GU’s dramas are complex,they can reveal many phonetic features of Suzhou dialect in the 16th century, and that it may not right for Gu Dadian to be classified to Wujiang School.
