Abstract
This study analyzes Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child (2019) as a cultural allegory of the conflict between revolutionary collectivism and the self-determining ethics of China’s post-1980s generation. It interprets Nezha’s “Demon Pill” (魔丸) as a moral stigma imposed by the remnants of revolutionary morality, representing the system’s ideological control over individual subjectivity. The transformation of the Nezha myth—from the Buddhist metaphor of self-liberation to the Confucian ethic of filial obedience—reveals the tension between resistance and conformity within China’s moral tradition. Nezha’s awakening, marked by his declaration “My fate is determined by myself, not by Heaven (我命由我不由天),” expresses a generational desire for autonomy but remains bound to traditional values of filial piety (孝) and benevolence (濟民). His rebellion thus exposes the contradictions of moral authority rather than fully transcending them. The film reimagines myth as a reflection of contemporary generational identity, illustrating the unfinished quest for moral and ideological self-definition in post-revolutionary China.
