Abstract

This study aimed to verify the effects of core stabilization exercises on attention and stereotyped behaviors in adolescents with developmental disabilities. The research involved three students with developmental disabilities from a special school in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, who participated in a 12-week core stabilization exercise program, conducted twice a week for 40 minutes per session. The study employed a multiple baseline across subjects design, which included baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. Attention was measured using the Children’s Color Trails Test (CCTT) , while the frequency of stereotyped behaviors was measured using a partial-interval recording method from video recordings. The results showed that core stabilization exercises were effective in improving attention in adolescents with developmental disabilities. All three participants' CCTT scores increased after the intervention, demonstrating improvements in both sustained and divided attention. Additionally, there was a positive effect on reducing the frequency of stereotyped behaviors, and this effect tended to be maintained during the maintenance phase after the intervention ended. Based on these findings, it is concluded that core stabilization exercises can be an effective intervention strategy for enhancing attention and reducing stereotyped behaviors in adolescents with developmental disabilities. A key advantage is that these exercises can be performed without specialized equipment or facilities, making them more accessible than traditional programs like aquatic exercises, tennis, or golf. However, the study's limitation of a small number of participants restricts the generalizability of the findings. Therefore, future research is needed to verify long-term effects and investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms involved..
