Abstract

This study aimed to empirically analyze the effects of virtual reality (VR)-based physical activity on the classroom participation and disruptive behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It focused on examining the emotional and cognitive aspects, such as learning attitudes, classroom participation, and disruptive behaviors. A multiple baseline design across subjects was applied, and the study participants consisted of three elementary school children with ASD. The study implemented an intervention comparing play-based VR physical activity and sports-based VR physical activity using a semi-immersive VR program. Each experimental session lasted 40 minutes, and the researchers analyzed 15-minute recorded video segments per session to measure classroom participation and disruptive behaviors. Classroom participation behaviors were categorized into (1) task performance behavior, (2) attention behavior, and (3) classroom preparation behavior, while disruptive behaviors were classified into (1) off-task behavior, (2) noise-making behavior, and (3) peer-disruptive behavior. Data were collected using partial-interval recording and quantitatively analyzed for behavioral changes. The key findings of the study are as follows: First, VR-based physical activity significantly improved the classroom participation behaviors of children with ASD. Second, it was effective in increasing task performance, attention, and classroom preparation behaviors. Third, VR-based physical activity had a significant effect on reducing disruptive behaviors. Fourth, it effectively decreased off-task behavior, noise-making behavior, and peer-disruptive behavior. Fifth, play-based VR physical activity tended to be more effective in increasing classroom participation behaviors compared to sports-based VR physical activity. This study suggests that VR-based physical activity can serve as an effective intervention by creating a more controlled learning environment for children with ASD, thereby promoting classroom participation and reducing disruptive behaviors.
