Abstract

This study aims to examine the experiential meaning of a university-based inclusive sports event and to derive implications for enhancing the social participation of individuals with disabilities. To achieve this, semi-structured and photo-elicitation interviews were conducted with 36 participants, including individuals with and without disabilities, parents of individuals with disabilities, and event organizers. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling, and each interview (ranging from 16 to 178 minutes, M = 56 minutes) was recorded with prior informed consent. Thematic analysis was employed based on ecological systems theory, categorizing influential factors at the organismic, microsystem, mesosystem, and macrosystem levels. To ensure the credibility and trustworthiness of the findings, peer debriefing and member checking were conducted. The findings indicate that participation in the inclusive sports event enhanced participants' belonging and social cohesion, broadened their perspectives on disability and inclusion, and provided opportunities for developing new social relationships. The structured and professional nature of the university-based setting ensured safety and reliability, reinforcing participants’ trust in the event. Additionally, the expertise and inclusive attitudes of the event organizers played a pivotal role in fostering positive changes in participants’ perceptions of disability and social inclusion. This study highlights the potential of university-based inclusive sports events as a strategic means for fostering meaningful social inclusion between individuals with and without disabilities. To further advance such initiatives, it is imperative to strengthen university-community partnerships, reframe disability awareness education through experiential learning, enhance teacher training and professional development for inclusive education, and establish supportive local environments that promote the long-term sustainability of inclusive sports initiatives.
