Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify appropriate ways for selecting the South Korean national wheelchair basketball team by analyzing the limitations of the merit-based selection system and exploring alternative approaches suitable for domestic conditions through high performance international cases. To achieve this, a survey was conducted to gather athletes' opinions on the current selection process, and literature on the selection methods of seven countries—Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the United States, Spain, and Australia that participated in the wheelchair basketball event at the Paris Paralympic Games was analyzed. The results of this study confirmed that countries with outstanding performance evaluate athletes based on basketball skills, wheelchair skills, and the strategic and tactical harmony between sports classes as determined by the coach. Furthermore, in-depth interviews revealed that selecting athletes solely based on contribution indicators has limitations. Therefore, improvements are needed in the selection process, such as refining contribution indicators, diversifying evaluation criteria, and clarifying the roles of coaches and specialized sports committees. Based on these findings, this study suggests that the selection process for the national wheelchair basketball team should adopt a multidimensional evaluation system. Specifically, athlete assessments should be divided into three categories: basic evaluation, which focuses on playing skills and physical fitness; observational evaluation, which assesses tactical understanding and psychological aspects; and document evaluation, which reviews an athlete's history, eligibility, and past performance.
