본 연구는 엘리트 휠체어 선수의 국제대회 출전 경험을 심층적으로 탐색하여 경기력 향상을 위한 컨디셔닝 관리 방안을 모색하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 휠체어 이용 장애인은 비장애인 또는 다른 유형의 장애인 선수와 비교하여 휠체어 이용 및 장애 유형으로 인한 신체적 제약 등 특수한 상황에 처해있다. 이에 엘리트 휠체어 선수의 국제대회 출전 경험 탐색을 통하여 이들의 특수한 상황을 이해하고 효율적인 컨디셔닝 관리 방안을 마련하고자 한다. 연구방법으로는 심층 면담을 통한 연구 참여자의 경험을 바탕으로 그들이 느낀 감정을 분석하고 해석하여 심도 깊게 이해하고자 하였다. 연구자는 심층 면담 과정에서 연구자의 주관적 입장으로 인한 영향을 최소화하고 중립적인 입장을 유지하였다. 연구 참여자 모집은 엘리트 휠체어 선수 중 최소 1회 이상 국제대회에 출전한 경험이 있는 선수 중 연구 참여에 동의한 선수 10명을 최종 선정하였다. 자료 수집은 2023년 11월~12월 사이 1대 1 대면 심층 면접을 실시하였다. 연구 참여자와의 면담 결과 국제대회 참가를 준비하는 과정을 전후한 경험으로부터 3개의 대주제를 도출하였으며, 각 주제별 하위 주제를 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 엘리트 휠체어 선수는 국제대회 출전을 위하여 항공기에 탑승하는 과정과 장시간 비행 간 비좁은 좌석에 앉아 발생하는 불편함을 홀로 감내하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 엘리트 휠체어 선수는 대회에서 우수한 성적을 거두기 위하여 주어진 훈련 프로그램에 몰두하는 등 본인의 건강관리에는 소홀한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 엘리트 휠체어 선수가 처한 특수한 상황을 올바르게 이해하고 맞춤형 컨디셔닝 관리가 필요한 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore in-depth the experiences of elite wheelchair athletes participating in international para sports competitions and to seek conditioning strategies to improve their performance. Compared to non-disabled athletes or athletes with other types of disabilities, those who use wheelchairs face challenges, such as physical limitations due to their wheelchair use. Therefore, by examining the experiences of elite wheelchair athletes participating in international para sports competitions, we aim to understand their specific challenges and develop effective conditioning techniques. The research method involved analyzing and interpreting data from in-depth interviews. For participant recruitment, 10 elite wheelchair athletes who had participated in more than one international para sports competition were selected. Data collection took place through one-on-one, in-depth interviews conducted between November and December 2023. The interviews with participants revealed three major themes regarding their experiences in international competitions. Firstly, the study found that elite wheelchair athletes endure discomfort when boarding airplanes and sitting in cramped seats during long flights to participate in international para sports competitions. Secondly, elite wheelchair athletes were observed to focus on their training programs to achieve excellent results in competitions, sometimes neglecting their own health management. Thirdly, it was evident that a proper understanding of the unique challenges faced by elite wheelchair athletes and customized conditioning strategies were necessary for their success.
