Abstract

Previous research on word-of-mouth communication has mainly focused on message receivers, i.e., what factors affect the WOM information adoption and subsequent attitude changes of the receivers. Little attention has been paid to message senders. When are senders more likely to spread their information and what factors influence their intention of WOM communication? Thus, this study examined the WOM communication intention of a sender focusing on the characteristics of the WOM information and the relationship between the sender and a receiver. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, a sender had greater intention of WOM communication when his/her opinions were based on factual rather than subjective attribute information. In other words, the type of information to be transmitted through WOM communication can have an influence on the sender’s communication intention. Second, the effect of information type on a sender’s communication intention became more salient when the sender and the receiver did not coincide in opinion versus they did. Third, the tie strength between a sender and a receiver turned out to have a moderating role. That is, the effect of information type a sender’s communication intention was greater in a weak tie condition than in a strong tie condition. These results imply that companies can increase the effectiveness of their WOM marketing efforts by spreading more factual information than subjective information and this is especially necessary for on-line environment where those who are involved in WOM communication usually don’t know each other very well(i.e., weak tie) and have greater possibility of refuting a sender’s message due to their heterogeneous nature.
