Abstract

The main purpose of this study is the conceptualization and measurement of clothing needs and wants. The conceptual structure of clothing needs and wants is analyzed using the laddering method of in-depth interview, appropriate measurement scale is developed, and its validity and reliability is examined based on survey questionnaire. This study comprises of both qualitative and quantitative research. For qualitative research, in-depth interview of 57 female was preformed using laddering method. Result from in-depth interview was analyzed and classified into relevant components and then it was coded into categorical variables comprising clothing needs and wants. The types and compositions of clothing needs and wants were identified and the measurement scale was developed based on network analysis and hierarchical clustering method. Subsequently, questionnaire survey was performed to 1039 female for the measurement of clothing needs and wants. The analysis of in-depth interview demonstrated the horizontal and decentralized network structure of clothing needs and wants. Using the network analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis, the hierarchical structure of clothing needs and wants was identified for which 32 different types of clothing needs and wants combination were identified from 107 components. In terms of the measurement scale of clothing needs and wants based on its conceptual structure and components, it was identified to have 6 dimensions such as; needs for conspicuousness, needs for convenience, needs for compensation, needs for recognition and needs for risk aversion. In conclusion, this study is intended to contribute to the conceptualization and developing a measurement scale of clothing needs and wants based on the inductive reasoning from in-depth interview. Clothing needs and wants demonstrated horizontal network structure. It has illustrated the effectiveness of the combined research method such as laddering interview technique, network analysis and hierarchical clustering as a tool to analyze the purpose of conceptualizing and identifying consumer needs and wants. A major contribution of this research is the inductive identification of a wide variety of clothing needs and wants. Furthermore, the methodological approach of this research implies that the incorporation of network analysis is founded on the fact that the conceptual structure of clothing needs and wants is identified as having horizontal network structure from in-depth interview. Further research incorporating all types of clothing needs and wants will be useful for the purpose of understanding current and prospective customers better. This study contributes to the ongoing analysis of understanding customers in depth both practically and theoretically
