Abstract

This study examines the generalizability of the previous research by investigating the influences of a dominant brand in the extension product category. Especially, we identify and examine a moderating effect of market variables such as the number of competitive brands and the level of technological innovation in the extension product category. Namely, we investigate the difference of dominant brand effect in extension product category, which can be moderated by the number of competitive brands as well as the level of technological innovation. Consistent with our prediction, there is a different influence between when a dominant brand is existed in the extension product category and not existed. That is to say, the evaluation of extension product is more unfavorable if a dominant brand exists. Moreover, the effect is more pronounced when the number of competitive brands in the extension product is large and when the level of technology innovation in the extension product category is low. Therefore, this study make more elaborately prior studies on the extension product category by market-related variables in a competitive environment. The overall implications to researchers and practitioners are presented, and limitation and further study directions are discussed as a final.
