초록

Cultural differences may influence people to react differently in terms of lip service, which is composed of positive messages and is consistent with an audience’s preferences. Easterners are more likely to consider both sides of a presented message due to yin and yang inferences, compared to Westerners, who do not engage in such yin and yang thinking. In other words, depending on the particular yin and yang inference, people exhibit different information processing patterns. Koreans tend to accept lip service as a weak lie, and react less positively (e.g., they show lower levels of credibility and positive emotion toward such lip service). In contrast, Canadians tend to receive the same words as a weak truth, and respond more positively. In a cross-cultural comparison of lip service usage, Canadians and Koreans tend to engage in frequent lip service on a daily basis. Accordingly, the findings suggest academic and managerial implications.
