Abstract
In several countries, such as China, luxury fashion sharing services are becoming popular. This is contrary to the fact that previous research cited ‘materialism’ as an obstacle to the success of sharing services. Luxury goods are known as a representative material product that people prefer to possess their own. The current study aims to provide an appropriate explanation of this phenomenon. Building on conceptual perspectives from social class and anti-consumption lifestyle, this study examines that consumers’ subjective social class affect the intention to use luxury fashion sharing service through the three types of anti-consumption. For this purpose, two experiments were conducted. Study 1 was conducted to explore whether correlation between social class and 3 types of anti-consumption is significant, and whether anti-consumption types are motivations for the use of luxury fashion sharing services. The measurement validity of subjective class was confirmed by testing correlation between both social class measurement (objective and subjective). In Study 2, the research model was demonstrated, and results are as follows. First, consumer's subjective social class affect both voluntary anti-consumption, and involuntary anti-consumption, while selective anti-consumption was not influenced by social class. Second, three types of anti-consumption positively predict the intention to use luxury fashion sharing services. Third, The effect of subjective class on intention to use sharing service through voluntary anti-consumption was moderated by consumers’ attitude toward used. Finally, the influence of control variables might provide an additional insights into the users of the sharing service: (a) woman shows relatively more involuntary and selective anti-consumption tendency, whereas men tends to be more voluntarily reduce their consumption than women. (b) age positively predicted voluntary anti-consumption lifestyle. (c) people who are interested in luxury fashion goods shows higher intention to use luxury sharing service. However, luxury purchase experience had a negative effect on use intention. (d) additionally, study 1 indicated that consumers consider luxury fashion sharing service as a platform where they can experience luxury items prior to purchase. One might avoid unnecessary consumption by using sharing platform as a way of reducing the risk of purchase.
