Abstract

This study investigates the effect of implicit self-theory on consumers’ responses to financial investment advice provided by artificial intelligence (AI) or human advisors. The results of the two studies suggest that incremental theorists tend to prefer human advisors to AI advisors, while entity theorists have indifferent attitudes toward advice. Specifically, Study 1 reveals that incremental theorists are more favorable toward investment products when the advisor is human. In Study 2, incremental theorists rated human-advisor advice more positively than that of AI-advisor. This relationship is mediated by perceived effort. These results help in understanding how consumers react to AI recommendation systems regarding financial investments.
