Abstract
This study examined how economic resources variedly affect happiness depending on the type of economic resources and the characteristics of consumers. The study categorized economic resources into income, net worth and debt and analyzed the impact of each resource on happiness across different age groups. Using data from the Korean Welfare Panel Study(KoWePS) in 2024, the study employed OLS regression analysis and Chow tests to investigate the effects of income, net worth and debt on happiness by age group. The analysis revealed significant differences in how economic resources affect happiness across different age groups. Income had the impact on happiness in the following order: 40s>50s>60s and above>20s-30s. Net worth had the lower impact in the 20s-30s compared to other age groups. Debt had negative impact on happiness in 60s and above. In terms of the relative impact of economic resources on happiness, for those in their 20s-30s, income, net worth and debt had no significant effect on happiness. For those in their 40s, only income had the impact. In the 50s and 60s age groups, income had the greatest impact, followed by net worth while the relative effect of net assets grow bigger in 60s. Overall, the study found that income had the greatest impact on happiness across all age group, and as age increases, the relative impact of assets on happiness grows. This suggests that financial management behavior and and asset accumulation are important factors for a happy life.
