Abstract
Benign envy is a productive response to stimulate consumer behavior and plays an important role in consumer choice, thus research on the topic is required. However, most Korean studies have adapted the benign envy scale which was developed as a single item or unidimensional concept in the U.S. Envy is expected as a multidimensional construct that is made up of complex and diverse emotion, thus the unidimensional envy scale seems to be another problem. This study conducted various pilot and main research and developed benign envy scale through a rigorous scale development process. One hundred fitty six items were drawn via previous research, questionnaire survey, and focus group interview. Then, a content validity confirmed 36 items as an item-pool. The study 1 performed scale purification, factor structure, reliability, convergent and discriminant validity regarding the 36 items. The study 2 conducted additional scale purification and various assessment using a confirmatory factor analysis, the study 3 reassessed the scale and investigated the nomological validity. The results of this study confirmed that the benign envy scale consist of three factors and 12 items in total. The three factors were called desire, emulation, and respect. This research is a primary study that developed a multidimensional benign envy scale. Theoretical and managerial contributions of the study is described and future research agenda is also suggested.
