Abstract

People frequently share their purchases and possessions on social media. This research examines how the identity relevance of a product and the type of post jointly shape consumers’ willingness to share. Across two experiments, we show that when products are highly identity-relevant, consumers prefer photo-only posts, as providing detailed purchase information heightens concerns about losing distinctiveness. By contrast, less identity-relevant products are more readily shared with detailed information. These findings highlight a previously overlooked trade-off in social media sharing: while possessions are often used to express identity, individuals may strategically withhold details to protect uniqueness. The results advance identity theory by showing that identity relevance is not universally beneficial; rather, it can generate tensions between the desire for self-expression and the need to preserve distinctiveness. By identifying distinctiveness threat as the mechanism underlying selective disclosure, this research enriches theories of digital self-presentation and suggest that marketers of identity-relevant products should support expressive sharing formats that avoid triggering concerns about being copied.
