Abstract
In this research, we propose two types of information sharing activities in social media - informative sharing and self-expressive sharing – and investigate those antecedents and consequences. Informative sharing concerns individuals’ tendency to acquire and pass on information deemed useful to potential audiences. Such information often includes news articles or third- person opinions. On the other hand, self-expressive sharing concerns individuals’ tendency to express a certain self-image or important values to others. This information often involves sharing personal experiences, emotions, or opinions. From a survey of South Korean Facebook users (n=200) conducted in 2012, we found that these two types of information sharing tendencies in social media were determined by different sets of factors. Specifically, individuals are more likely to engage in informative sharing in social media when each of the following factors is greater: Internet usage hours, feelings of guilt about time spent on the Web, the degree of social connection, and feelings of loneliness. However, the tendency for individuals to engage in self-expressive sharing is related only to the degree of social connection. In addition, we found that each type of sharing tendency in social media differently predicts consumption behaviors, such as social commerce use, word-of–mouth activity, and preference for luxury brands. In particular, the more consumers engage in self-expressive sharing, the more likely they are to engage in word-of-mouth involving products or services. However, the tendency to engage in informative sharing does not predict such behaviors. Also, the more consumers engage in informative sharing, the more likely they are to be involved in social commerce usage. However, the tendency to engage in self-expressive sharing increases such behaviors indirectly through word-of-mouth activity. Lastly, the tendency to engage in self- expressive sharing increases preference for luxury brands indirectly through word-of-mouth activity. However, the tendency to engage in informative sharing does not predict such behaviors. Additionally, we explored individuals’ traits associated with each tendency to engage in information sharing. We found that informative sharing was highly correlated to individuals’ traits, such as optimism and beliefs in politics. On the other hand, self-expressive sharing was highly correlated with life satisfaction, prioritizing a balanced life, and being motivated for achievement.
