There exists a close relationship between Madman, the protagonist in Lu Xun’s short story “A Madman’s Diary,” and the author Lu Xun. This essay investigates two different relationships through comparison with The Movable Parts(Huodong Bian Renxing) by the Chinese writer Wang Meng and “The Fig Tree”(Mu Hwa Gwa) by the Korean poet Kim Ji-ha. The first is between ‘I’ in the preface to the mad man’s diary, written in classical Chinese, and the ‘I’ in the diary, written in vernacular Chinese. The second relationship is between the two ‘I’ narrators and the author Lu Xun. These relationships reveal that “A Madman’s Diary” ironically is a detailed reflection of Lu Xun’s experience in Japan and the Xinhai Revolution. This alternative reading makes “A Madman’s Diary” have richer and more intense implications.
