초록

This paper revisits Lu Xun’s “A Madman’s Diary” from a psychoanalytic perspective. After finding a transcribed mandate of “eat people” in a history book, the madman becomes paranoid and anxious that he might be eaten by others. Accepting all signifiers as the only signified, “man-eating,” due to his damaged signifying function, the madman exemplifies the Lacanian schizophrenic subject. Believing himself to be the only “real person,” the madman desperately resists the encrypted mandate, only to find that he has already eaten his younger sister’s flesh unwittingly in the past. Nevertheless, he keeps on resisting in order to “save the children” and prevent the extinction of the Chinese race. Although the madman does not give a specific plan to “save the children,” we can infer that he would seek to achieve his goal through his selective eating of man-eaters, or the older generation, including himself. This psychoanalytic reading of “A Madman’s Diary” will help us not only to shed light on the blind spots of the conventional allegorical reading of the text but also to bridge between the two divergent endings of the story.
