Abstract

This paper revisits Lu Xun’s preface to “A Madman’s Diary” from the perspective of medical humanities. Written in classical Chinese, the preface is often regarded as a metaphor for the cannibalistic feudal society surrounding the madman. However, a detailed analysis of the three characters appearing in the preface debunks the common belief. First, the narrator of the preface, who identifies the madman’s symptom as persecution mania and intends to serve his diary as a subject for medical research, sees the madman’s madness from the perspective of psychiatry and psychoanalysis of the West which was introduced through Japan. Naming his diary “A Madman’s Diary,” the madman himself participates in the translingual and transcultural practice in which the traditional concept of kuang, by way of the Western discourse of psychiatry, is transformed into the modern concept of kuangren. Different from the two characters, the madman’s older brother seems to waver between the traditional and the modern. Nevertheless, he too is far from being a hard-line adherent of the traditional worldview. The world of the preface, which is much more modern than it appears, urges us to make a complete change in direction of our second, allegorical reading of the preface as well.
