A Research on Two Types of Chinese-Korean Translation Trends Generated during the Opening and Awakening Period of Korea

The opening and awaking period refers to the period from the signing of the Ganghwa Island Treaty to the beginning of the Japanese colonial period. Since the founding of Korea, it had always implemented the policy of shutting door off from outside. Since the opening and awaking period, Korea had gradually opened its door to outside world and subsequently signed the trade treaty with the United States, Britain, Germany and other countries. In turn, it had been shocked and awed by the advanced science, technology and military strength these countries possess, and naturally the demand for translation had arisen, as a result the translation of related books from Japan and China had begun. There were two types of translation trends during this period: one was the influx of Western missionaries, which led to their cooperation with the Koreans in translating the Bible, and the other was to inspire people's patriotism, the Korean patriots had carried out the translation of works by Liang Qichao on their own. This paper will study on the two translation trends generated in the context of this period, from the perspective of translators, translation objects, translation purposes, and translation methods.
