Abstract

This paper examines the dilemma between China’s Guochao (nationalistic consumption trend) and the globalization of Chinese culture through a comparative analysis of two adaptations of Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning novel The Three-Body Problem — the Tencent-produced Chinese version and the Netflix-produced English version. The Tencent adaptation achieved significant domestic success, fueled by patriotic sentiment and the momentum of the Guochao phenomenon. However, due to Tencent’s bifurcated platform structure, integrated data analysis and consistent recommendation algorithms were not possible, which limited the show's global reach. In contrast, the Netflix version, produced with substantial investment and targeted at English-speaking audiences, succeeded in attaining high international visibility. Yet, by excluding many Chinese cultural elements, it weakened its potential as a vehicle for promoting Chinese culture abroad. Through an analysis of platform architecture, data policies, recommendation systems, and audience reception, this paper identifies a central dilemma between Guochao and the globalization of Chinese culture. On the one hand, Guochao-driven cultural content can appear statistically “global” due to China’s massive domestic market. However, without structural integration and algorithmic continuity across platforms, it struggles to achieve substantive global influence. On the other hand, internationally adapted content stripped of Guochao sentiment may succeed on a global scale but contributes little to the globalization of Chinese culture. To address this dilemma, the study argues for the need to resolve platform fragmentation—potentially through approaches like federated learning—and to improve the quality of cultural content.
