Abstract
One of the most representative expressions of nostalgia in contemporary Chinese society can be found in narratives centered on the baomu. It is notable that the baomu, a figure that remained unofficial and largely invisible during the Mao era, has emerged as a central symbol of cultural nostalgia in the post-reform era. In particular, Wang Anyi’s works are striking in their detailed depictions of private caregiving centered around the baomu, even though they are set during the Maoist period. The baomu, as a symbol of feudal hierarchy and private domestic care, stands in direct contrast to the socialist ideals that sought to eliminate class distinctions. Despite the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, which emphasized equality as its highest value, the baomu's labor in housekeeping and childcare persisted. As the division of labor transitioned from the family-centered to the state-centered model, baomu became informal but essential caregivers who filled the childcare gap left by the state. In Wang Anyi’s two works, maternal roles are portrayed as vague or absent, suggesting a connection to the post-1949 socialist ideal of “female liberation through productive labor.” In Fuping, the mother appears relatively indifferent due to her involvement in public duties, while the autonomy of the baomu of that era is vividly drawn. In “Good Nanny, Uncle Xie, Aunt Xiaomei, and Nini”, the character of Good Nanny performs the role of a mother functionally, without emotional engagement, whereas Aunt Xiaomei performs caregiving with genuine affection and emotional presence. At the time, Chinese women were expected to fulfill roles in the public sphere rather than embody traditional motherhood. This explains why Fuping treats motherhood and maternal identity in a blurred and diminished manner, and why Good Nanny is depicted as a source of confusion and emotional instability. The caregiving narratives centered on the baomu in Wang Anyi’s fiction illustrate the emotional bonds and everyday care that baomu provided. By evoking the baomu as the emotional anchor of the Mao era, Wang’s works stimulate nostalgia for a sense of emotional connectedness that was both lost in the past and remains absent in the present.
