초록

The purpose of this paper is to reexamine a quite widely adopted view on the so-called /h/-palatalization in Korean and to raise questions about the validity of this claim. We argue that there might be no /h/-palatalization, at least as a psychological reality of current speakers of Korean, contrary to the standard view. We will investigate a wide range of data cross-linguistically and reach the conclusion that the so-called /h/-palatalization might have been working during the long span of time when sound change was brought about among dialects and among different languages including Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. We argue that the /h/-palatalization exists only as a historical phonological procedure and not as a psychological reality of current speakers of Korean. One clear fact is that there is a correspondence between /h/ and /x/ among the borrowed vocabulary in these languages. We provide evidence for this claim by comparing the data from Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese.
