This paper demonstrates that the Kyungsang /n/-insertion before [j] arises to remedy the heteromorphemic C[j] clusters and its wide distribution, compared to standard Korean /n/-insertion, and is closely related with the onset simplification in Kyungsang Korean. Kyungsang Korean does not allow complex onsets including a CG onset and requires them to be simplified into a singleton onset via deletion of a glide or coalescence of a glide and the following vowel. Kyungsang Korean allows only a (C)V(C) syllable structure. Thus, in Kyungsang Korean, the [nasal]-insertion takes place at every morphemic juncture between a consonant-final morpheme and a [j]-initial morpheme, where the high-ranked ReSyll constraint will produce a heteromorphemic C[j] cluster. According to the proposal, the Kyungsang /n/-insertion and the onset simplification are two different phonological processes for one conspiracy to avoid complex onsets: the monomorphemic C[j] cluster applies to the onset simplification while the heteromorphemic C[j] clusters apply to the [nasal]-insertion to satisfy the high-ranked Align(M,R,σ,R) and ReSyll constraints. This paper also claims that the absence of the [nasal]-insertion in the heteromorphemic C[w] clusters is due to the undominated OnsetCond in Korean which prohibits the velar nasal on onset position, based on the phonetic and phonological observation that the nasalization of [w] will derive the velar nasal.
