초록

Recent studies have revealed that sound changes are underway in Korean obstruents. While significant attention has been paid to the change of aspirated obstruents, that of lax counterparts has not been examined fully. Focusing on the diachronic changes of the lax category that should originally be voiced, this paper offers historical, phonological, and phonetic evidence to demonstrate their validity. First, this study found that there was a voiced-voiceless opposition for the lax category in Old Korean. Second, a phoneme should be set taking into account the abstract and psychological reality. Third, vowels fully accompany the information of preceding consonants. While these considerations in mind, the sound change in contemporary Korean can be accounted for by the standard tonogenesis of voiceless-high and voiced-low(i.e., /d/ → [th] in 달[thàl] vs. 탈[thál]). Thus, the study concludes that the lax-voiced analysis is simpler, offers a better solution for the unsolved problems of the lax-voiceless orthodoxy, and enables a better understanding of the diachronic change of the lax category.
