Abstract

This study examines Nam Gong-cheol (1760–1840)’s taste for calligraphy and painting, as well as the distinctive features of his Classical Chinese Poetry, as part of an effort to explore the literary aesthetics and perception of reality among the gyeonghwa sajok (京華士族) of the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Nam Gong-cheol extensively collected and appreciated Chinese calligraphy and paintings, pursuing a professional and systematic approach to connoisseurship His passion for art was not restrained by the traditional Confucian warning against indulgence in material objects (玩物喪志), but rather grounded in an optimistic view of the world as an era of peace and prosperity. A notable feature of his work is the attempt to recreate his own space as a Jiangnan (江南) literary and artistic realm through multisensory experiences that combined exposure to Ming–Qing poetry and exotic objects. His taste for calligraphy and painting is vividly reflected throughout his writings. Nam frequently used contemporary Korean painters and Chinese artworks as poetic subjects, highlighting their artistic value and embedding professional insights into brushwork techniques and the skills of individual artists within his verse. He also consciously depicted real landscapes using compositional and stylistic principles of painting, or transposed beautiful real-life scenery into the idiom of Chinese Southern School landscape painting. However, Nam’s poetry reveals certain limitations in that it seldom engages with the concrete social realities or the lives of ordinary people. Nam Gong-cheol’s case demonstrates that, amid an increasingly optimistic perception of reality and a deepening longing for Chinese calligraphy, painting, and Jiangnan literary culture around the turn of the nineteenth century, poetic representation of concrete reality was gradually fading from the interests of gyeonghwa sajok literati.
