Abstract

This study introduces Naeam Jeong Sa-ung (耐菴 鄭士雄), a poet who has received little scholarly attention, and examines the distinctive features of his poetic style as preserved in his collection Naeam Yugo (耐菴遺稿). Jeong Sa-ung regarded himself not as an official or scholar but as a literary artist, and was esteemed among his contemporaries to such a degree that he was addressed as “Old Master” (老師伯) in recognition of his poetic talent. His active participation in the literary culture of the time is demonstrated by his exchanges of poetry with prominent figures, including Heo Bong, Heo Nanseolheon, Sim Hui-su, Hwang Jeong-uk, Yun Du-su, Cha Cheon-ro, and Choe Rip. Naeam Yugo was printed in Seongju in 1668 by Jo Seong, Jeong’s great-grandson on his mother’s side, using woodblock printing. The collection contains eighty-six poems across seventy-nine headings. Although modest in scale, it offers significant insight into Jeong Sa-ung’s poetic identity and creative inclination. In particular, his long-form verse, yuefu-style poetry, and Tang-style poetics reveal the breadth of his stylistic experimentation and literary ambition. By reexamining Jeong Sa-ung and his surviving works, this study seeks to enhance our understanding of him as a noteworthy poet of the mid-sixteenth to early seventeenth century and to situate his poetry within the broader literary culture of his time.
