Abstract
This study aims to explore the characteristics of Rhyme-Matching(次韻) and Adaptation(轉用) in Li Bai’s poem, “The Feeling of Autumn at Xunyang Taoist Temple(尋陽紫極宮感秋作)”, within the context of Joseon Dynasty literary reception. This particular poem was the most frequently rhyme-matched work among Li Bai’s poetry by Joseon literati. During the Joseon period, Li Bai's poetry was primarily received through “the Classified and Annotated Poems of Li Taibai(分類補注李太白詩)”, and the rhyme-matching of “The Feeling of Autumn at Xunyang Taoist Temple” was inspired by Su Shi(蘇軾)'s rhyme-matching poem included in the “Shilinguangji(詩林廣記)”. The tradition of rhyme-matching poetry in the early Joseon period, initiated by Shin Suk-ju(申叔舟), later evolved with Yi Hwang(李滉), who infused Neo-Confucian themes into the practice, which was subsequently inherited by his disciples. In the late Joseon period, Song Si-yeol(宋時烈) composed rhyme-matching poems with his political allies and disciples, using them to express dissatisfaction with political rivals. Meanwhile, Kim Jo-soon(金祖淳) utilized rhyme-matching poetry to strengthen a sense of solidarity with prominent scholars involved in the compilation of “the Collected Works of Hongjae(弘齋全書)”. Furthermore, Park Seong-yang(朴性陽) incorporated new themes and content that differed from Li Bai's original work in his series of 49 rhyme-matching poems. Initially, Joseon literati embraced Li Bai’s poetry as a classical model, but over time, the influence of Neo-Confucianism and factional ideologies of the Joseon Dynasty gradually replaced it. The evolving trends of rhyme-matching poetry during the Joseon period serve as a significant example illustrating the characteristics of Korean classical poetry.
