Abstract
This study examines approximately 200 Gaxing-ti poetry (歌行體, "song style poetry") written by five prominent writers of late Joseon Korea: Chae Jegong(蔡濟恭), Jeong Beomjo(丁範祖), Yi Heon-gyeong(李獻慶), Mok Manjung(睦萬中), and Shin Gwangsu(申光洙). These writers were active during the reigns of Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo, were affiliated with the Namin (Southern Faction), and frequently composed both pre-Tang poetry (古體詩) and Gaxing-ti poetry. The poems demonstrate a wide range of subject matter, including travel, friendship, objects, everyday life, and food—an expansion from the original yuefu (樂府) tradition, which primarily recorded the lives of common people. In terms of expression, these works often offer concrete explanations and vivid depictions of the situations they describe. This tendency appears related to the lengthening of poetic form and the rise of realism in late Joseon poetry. Thematically, the poems encompass both the public duties of scholar-officials and the personal emotions of the poets. This indicates that gahaengche had begun to move beyond its origins in yuefu toward becoming a form of general lyrical poetry.
