Abstract

This article examines recent developments of network politics in Korea. The main purpose of this article is to reveal what the new media really do for new social movements in Korea. The political terrain is rapidly changing by the spread of smart phones and social network services. The new alternative public sphere emerges when people accelerate combining Social Network Services(SNS) with smart phone. It is basically operated by platforms of SNS like Google, Twitter and Facebook. As a result the virtual public sphere is regulated by the platforms of SNS. This platform politics has affinity with ‘cynical populism’ and antagonism towards established politics. But the virtual public sphere of virtual masses are apt to be disappear when an event or a movement has gone. The new social movement based upon SNS has to find a way to keep the power of reflective democracy.
