투표행위에 대한 기존의 연구들은 유권자 분석에 있어서 첫째, 개인을 분석단위로 하였을 뿐 가족의 영향력을 고려하지 않았으며 둘째, 여성을 매우 동질적인 집단으로 전제하면서 여성들이 공통적으로 남성과는 다른 투표행태를 가지고 있다는 전제하에 이루어졌다. 이 논문은 기존 연구에서 제대로 분석되지 않은 측면에 역점을 두어, 여성의 정치적 선택에 있어서, 배우자가 미치는 영향의 정도에 대해 살펴보았다. 1990년대의 두 차례의 대선과 총선에 대한 서베이 자료를 바탕으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다: 첫째, 부부투표의 동질성이 매우 높은 것으로 나타났다; 둘째, 동질적 부부투표에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 주요한 요인은 학력수준과 지역변수로 나타났다. 이 논문은 학력이 낮을수록 그리고 지역주의가 강할수록 부부투표의 동질성이 높아질 수 있음을 함축하고 있다.
Abstract
Existing analyses on voting behavior have following shortcomings: They focus only on individuals as the unit of analysis without considering the family effect on voting behavior; they assume that women as a homogeneous group have different voting behavior from men’s. For the more comprehensive understanding of women’s voting behavior, this article investigates how much husbands may have influence on their wives’ political decision making, i.e., voting. Findings based on the analyses on two presidential elections and two congressional elections in 1990s are as follows: Firstly, couple voting are very homogeneous; Secondly, the significant factors for explaining homogeneous couple voting are education and region. This may imply that the lower the education level, the more homogeneous couple voting and that the stronger the regionalism, the more homogeneous couple voting.
