Abstract
This study attempts to empirically examine what impact factors of familial background have on academic achievement of high school students, in the light of recent debate concerning whether competition to the entry of college education reproduce social stratification. Drawing upon the Korea Labor Panel Survey data, our analysis affirms that the family’s investment for crammer education and parent’s conversation with students have a positive effect over their academic scores, with statistical significance. When dividing the sample by gender, male students’ academic achievement is affected only by house-hold income, while female students’ academic scores show a significant influence of three mother factors, comprised of her education and job activity, and the interactive term of the two mother-status factors. Interestingly, mother’s education and no-job-activity independently have a positive relationship with female students' academic scores, whereas the interaction of the two variables has an opposite (negative) effect on their daughters’ academic achievement. This finding implies the significance of a role-model that mothers play for female students, which means that highly educated mothers, having no job, are likely to discourage their daughters’ academic efforts.
