Abstract

In Korean politics, the political ideology of female voters is believed to be relatively progressive compared to that of male voters. In reality, several surveys prior to the early 2010s revealed that female voters, on average, had a more progressive ideology than male voters. However, since 2012, the political ideology of female voters has been relatively conservative compared to male voters. This paper attempts to clarify why female voters became more conservative than males. According to several statistical analyses, the presence of a dominant female politicianformer President Park Geunᐨ Hyehas had a considerable influence on the ideological setting of female voters, leading their recent conservatism. When controlling for the effect of the former president, social factors including economic participation and education contributed to the progressivism of female voters even in the 2010s.
