그라데이션 기법을 통한 색채 이미지 표현연구 -페르낭 레제의 작품을 중심으로-

본 연구는 입체주의 사조의 페르낭 레제의 색채표현기법 중 ‘그라데이션’이 주는 감성 효과를 분석하는데 있다. 회화에서 색은 형태를 위한 보조적 역할 또는 재현을 위한 기술적 수단으로 사용되었으나, 19세기 이후 후기-인상주의를 기점으로 점차 그 자체로써 주체적 발언권을 획득하며 표현적 힘을 얻게된다. 특히 레제가 속했던 20세기 초반의 입체주의에서, 색채는 개인의 비물질적인 감정 및 사상을표출하는 요소로 사용된다. 이때, 레제는 주관적 심상에 대한 호소력을 높이기 위해 속도감 있는‘그라데이션’ 기법을 특징적으로 사용한다. 일반적으로 그라데이션 기법이란 색상․명도․채도의 완만한점진적 단계변화를 이용하여 연속적 흐름을 구현하는데, 레제는 급격한 단계변화를 이용한 그라데이션표현기법을 사용하고 있다. 이는 레제가 표현하는 “기계-인간”이라는 대상에 동적인 이미지를 부여하는중요한 방법론이 되는데, 당시 기계 미학을 지향하던 사회적 배경 및 산업화에 따른 기계 문물 중, 이동수단이 제공하는 속도감에 매료되었던 레제의 개인적 경험이 반영된 결과라고 본다. 색채 이미지 분석은작품 디지털 이미지를 활용하여, 먼저 전체 작품에 나타난 색채를 면적비로 구성한 배색띠와 원작에서그라데이션이 사용된 부분만을 따로 면적비로 표현한 그라데이션 배색띠를 만든 후, 이 배색 이미지들이갖는 세분화된 인상을 분석하기 위해 ‘I.R.I 이미지 스케일’을 통해 감성 형용사를 도출해내었다. 그결과, 작품의 전체 이미지는 매우 동적이며 딱딱한 이미지를 가지고 있으며, 그라데이션 표현 역시이와 유사한 분석 결과가 도출되었다. 레제의 작품에 표현된 색채 이미지는 색의 자율성에 대한 시대적흐름을 보여주면서, 동시에 역동적으로 변모하는 기계문명의 변화된 시대상을 반영한 것이다. 특히레제의 그라데이션 기법은 이러한 작품 전체가 갖는 색채 이미지와 같은 맥락에서 연동되며, 자신의감성적 표현 의도를 드러내기 위한 적극적인 수단으로 사용되었다.
Abstract
This study is to analyze the emotional effect of ‘gradation’ among the color expression techniques of Fernand Léger. From the 19th century, with Post-Impressionism as a starting point, color gradually acquires expressive power. In particular, in Cubism in the early 20th century, to which Léger belonged, color is used as an element to express one’s non-material feelings and thoughts. At this time, Léger characteristically uses the fast-paced ‘gradation’ technique to increase the appeal of subjective imagery. In general, the gradation technique implements a continuous flow by using gentle gradual step changes of hue, brightness, and saturation, but Léger uses a gradation expression technique using rapid step changes. This becomes an important methodology to give a dynamic image to the subject of “machine-human” expressed by Léger, who was fascinated by the sense of speed provided by the means of transport among the social background that oriented the aesthetics of machines at the time and the machine culture following industrialization. The color image analysis utilizes the digital image of the work to first create a color matching band composed of the area ratio of the colors shown in the entire work and a gradation color band expressing only the area where the gradation is used in the original work separately, and emotional adjectives were derived through the 'I.R.I image scale’ to analyze the detailed impressions of these colored images. As a result, the overall image of the work is very dynamic and has a hard image, and similar analysis results were derived for the gradation expression. The color images expressed in Léger’s work show the flow of the times for the autonomy of color, and at the same time reflect the changed times of the mechanical civilization that is dynamically changing. In particular, Léger’s gradation technique is linked in the same context as the color image of the whole of these works, and was used as an active means to reveal his emotional expression intentions.
