Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how a person’s life is deeply infiltrated with the great forces of the times and the state using a cognitive metaphor theory through ‘female nude painting’ among various works of Pan Yuliang(1895~1977), who expresses the naked female body as the theme. Pan Yuliang, the subject of study, is a first-generation female Western painter in China. The period of Pan Yuliang’s work coincided with the era of turbulence and confusion in China’s modern history. Therefore, in order to reach the goal domain of liberation of women and the restoration of damaged humanity suffered by women of low status in China’s feudal patriarchal society, ‘naked female body’ was brought in from the source domain. Pan Yuliang’s works are largely divided into ‘self-portrait’ and ‘female nude’. Among them, the analysis of Pan Yuliang’s ‘female nude painting’ was classified into a cognitive linguistic approach by classifying the Chinese-Western fusion as a metaphorical representation structure, nude painting as aesthetic autonomy, and nude painting as a metaphor of maternity. The analysis results of the works analyzed with this classification system are summarized as follows. 1)The work of female nude painting started under the influence of the nude class at the Shanghai Art Exhibition, and increased after returning to China in 1928, when the influence of Western art she learned while studying in Europe overlapped. 2)The expression method of female nude painting was embodied as a Chinese-Western fusion that combines traditional Chinese line drawing techniques with Western impressionism, fauvism, and realism techniques. 3)As a result of examining aesthetic perception and body metaphor, female nude painting is the result of artistic will as a life expressed as a pictorial metaphor. 4)Pan Yuliang’s ‘female nude painting’ is the result of the artist’s metaphorical projection and resistance to the times and reflection of her identity.
