Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reveal the male-centeredness of ocular centrism that has supported Western philosophy and art and to analyze how reflection and resistance to such male bias have been expressed in postmodern art. The aesthetics of selflessness, aimlessness, and indifference, which were the premise of modernist art, are that art should be viewed only as its own beauty, and this philosophical view was premised on the perspective of an aristocratic man who equated goodness and beauty. The male-centeredness of ocular centrism is also represented in traditional art, with men as the subject and women as objects exposed to the subject's gaze. Therefore, class and gender bias already exist in the perspective of defining art. In Western philosophy, vision has been considered the sense that can most rationally grasp the truth, which can be attributed to the distance between the subject and the object. However, power and violence inevitably coexist in the distance between object and subject. The male-centeredness of ocular centrism is also represented in traditional art, with men as the subject and women as objects exposed to the subject's gaze. Women artists in postmodern art subvert this hierarchy by discovering female identity as a subject rather than as an object. In addition, this paper deals with the rise of marginalized media and senses as a means of overturning this hierarchy of subjects and objects. Finally, by examining the works of Korean artists who address the issue of active ‘seeing’ by reflectively and tactilely looking at images of the other in painting, we address the possibility of overturning the Western male-centeredness perspective. The significance of this study lies in examining male-centeredness of ocular centrism and its connection to feminism art, and in overcoming the hierarchy between the subject and the other by looking at the image reflectively.
