Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore methods of creating sculptures that organically transform in response to environmental variables by employing procedural generation and algorithm-based growth models within digital sculpting techniques. This research goes beyond simply simulating the modeled form of plants in digital environments; it aims to integrate the artist’s design intention with technical rules, thereby generating a dynamic sculptural process that reflects both the state of the viewer and the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the study seeks to investigate to what extent this approach can open new sculptural possibilities in the fields of media art and digital sculpture. In this process, the role of the artist extends beyond that of a traditional creator who directly produces a work, to that of a designer who develops algorithmic rules aligned with artistic objectives, observes changes caused by various environmental factors, and records the resulting transformations as part of the creative act. The research methodology consisted of three steps. First, a theoretical foundation was established through a review of algorithm-based growth models and prior studies. Second, an algorithm modified from fractal and L-system concepts was implemented, incorporating environmental variables (light, moisture, temperature, etc.) to simulate the growth process of virtual plants. Third, Blender software and Plotly.js were used to visualize the growth trajectories and morphological variations in 3D. The results confirmed that the designed virtual plants generated diverse morphological transformations according to environmental conditions and algorithmic rules. This process was reinterpreted as a form of sculptural art that reflects the intentions and conditions of both the artist and the audience, suggesting the potential for expansion into interactive art and AI-based artistic practices.
