Abstract

This study, grounded in Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), empirically investigates the effects of real-time interactive UI design in Learning Management Systems (LMS) on learners’ extraneous cognitive load, learning engagement, and task performance speed. With the growth of online education, the complexity of LMS user interfaces and feedback structures has emerged as a critical factor influencing learning outcomes. This research aims to systematically verify these effects. Through lit review and multiple case analyses, the study compared the interaction structures and interface characteristics of eight representative LMS platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Canvas). Based on these findings, an experimental design was developed to compare an optimized UI with a conventional one. The experiment involved 60 university students who completed identical learning tasks—such as real-time chat, assignment submission, and quiz completion—while data were collected on task time, error rate, cognitive load, engagement, and satisfaction. The analysis showed the group using the optimized interface achieved, on average, a 30–50% reduction in task time, a 3–6-fold decrease in error rates, and significantly lower cognitive load scores (p < 0.01), compared to the group using the conventional UI. Moreover, learning engagement and satisfaction levels were higher in the optimized group. These findings suggest that simplifying information structures, enhancing feedback responsiveness, and reducing interaction paths within the interface effectively reduce extraneous cognitive load and improve learners’ engagement and task efficiency. This study holds academic significance in that it moves beyond traditional content-centered instructional design by empirically demonstrating the impact of UX-centered interface structure design on learning experiences. Furthermore, it offers practical design guidelines and intervention strategies for optimizing user experience in real-time online learning platforms, laying a foundation for future improvements in LMS systems and the design of immersive learning environments.
