Abstract

In the context of global population aging and the increasing emphasis on healthy aging, this study aims to explore the design components of neighborhood parks that support health-promoting behaviors among community-dwelling older adults, thereby providing foundational design directions for creating age-friendly cities and communities. Based on the physiological characteristics of older adults, this study integrates Social Cognitive Theory, the Input-Identification-Output spatial design generation model, and relevant previous research. It analyzes neighborhood park cases from Seoul (South Korea), Portland (USA), Fukuoka (Japan), and Hoppers Crossing (Australia) to empirically identify the theoretical relationship between park design elements and older adults’ health-promoting behaviors. The case analysis reveals that effective park design can significantly enhance older adults’ physical activity and behavioral diversity. Accordingly, the study proposes a three-stage behavioral support framework consisting of motivation, stay, and circulation, and identifies three types of design elements: (1) motivational elements that encourage park entry, (2) spatial elements that support sustained activity, and (3) path elements that ensure safe movement. These elements can be reflected in spatial structure, facility layout, signage systems, and perceived environments. Ultimately, to promote older adults’ health and well-being, future neighborhood park design should address their specific needs by integrating the built environment, social context, and emotional support to create a healthy and friendly space that older adults want to visit, feel safe to access, and are encouraged to return to regularly.
