Abstract

(Background and Objective) In the context of rapidly aging populations, the health challenges and caregiving needs of the elderly have become urgent global social issues. This demographic shift not only increases pressure on healthcare systems but also underscores the necessity of creating supportive and health-promoting environments for older adults. Community therapeutic landscapes, as a form of auxiliary healthcare that integrates natural healing elements, have increasingly entered the public discourse. These landscapes aim to enhance the holistic health of the elderly—physiologically, psychologically, and socially—by bridging the gap between medical care and daily living. They offer accessible, non-invasive, and preventive forms of support. This study aims to develop an aging-friendly design framework for therapeutic landscapes within community green spaces and to examine the role of spatial environments in improving the comprehensive health of the elderly. (Method) This study adopts the concept of evidence-based design, emphasizing that design decisions should be grounded in validated research findings. Through a theoretical model construction approach, the study synthesizes existing multidisciplinary research to establish a design framework. To clarify the relationships among therapeutic landscapes, community green spaces, and elderly health, the study focuses on Stress Reduction Theory (SRT) and Attention Restoration Theory (ART), extracting key environmental characteristics of therapeutic landscapes. Additionally, the definitions and scope of communities and community green spaces are precisely delineated. By reviewing global elderly health surveys, the study analyzes representative conditions across physical, psychological, and social health dimensions. Based on this, a triadic causal pathway and relational model is constructed—linking therapeutic landscapes, community green spaces, and elderly health—and systematically examines how therapeutic landscape features in green spaces influence the spatial experiences and health outcomes of older adults. (Results) This study constructs a theoretical model for community therapeutic landscape design with a focus on promoting elderly health. Grounded in the logic of “X → M → Y,” the research proposes an analytical framework defined as: Community green space (C) × Therapeutic landscape (X) → Need-based space (M) → Elderly health (Y). This framework introduces the concept of need-based space as a central mediating variable, emphasizing that spatial functions should be adapted to meet the physiological health, psychological health, and social health needs of the elderly. The model identifies four key types of spatial categories—dynamic space, static space, shared space, and safety space—each of which is addressed through design-based examples to respond to distinct aging-related needs. Ultimately, this leads to the development of a comprehensive aging-friendly design framework for therapeutic landscapes. (Conclusion) The design framework proposed in this study offers a clear theoretical and practical foundation for both future and existing community therapeutic landscape planning. By tailoring spatial design to meet the multifaceted health needs of older adults, the framework contributes to building inclusive, elderly-friendly urban environments. It also provides valuable guidance for policymakers, urban designers, and healthcare planners in creating public spaces that support therapeutic outcomes.
