Abstract

(Background and Purpose) As the population ages at an accelerated rate, enhancing the quality of life and living environments for older adults has become a pivotal societal challenge. In this context, the importance of age-friendly spatial design has been increasingly emphasized. Neighborhood parks located within daily living areas has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on the promotion of physical health, social interaction, and psychological well-being among older adults. However, many extant park designs have not adequately considered the physical and behavioral characteristics of older users, resulting in problems such as inadequate accessibility and insufficient facilities, which negatively affect their overall user experience. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the correlations among the design elements of neighborhood parks, the user experience of older adults, and their satisfaction levels. The objective of this initiative is to provide foundational data for planning and designing age-friendly outdoor environments. (Method) The study focused on neighborhood parks located in urban residential areas and conducted empirical research methods with older adults serving as the primary user group. First, pivotal design elements were identified through a comprehensive review of extant studies, and a research model was established with neighborhood park design elements (X) as independent variables, older user experience (M) as the mediating variable, and satisfaction (Y) as the dependent variable. Second, a questionnaire was developed based on previous research findings and characteristics of older adults’park usage. A survey was then conducted. Finally, a parallel mediation analysis was performed using SPSS 27.0 to verify the relationships among variables and to derive design improvement strategies. (Results) The results indicated that the design elements of neighborhood parks exert a significant positive effect on the user experience of older adults. Specifically, comfort (β=.191, p < .001), safety (β =.172, p =.006), sociability (β=.117, p =.045), diversity (β=.268, p<.001), and natural affinity (β=.297 , p<.001) were confirmed as major factors enhancing user experience, whereas accessibility (β=−.003, p=.952) did not demonstrate a significant effect. The mediation analysis further revealed that both the direct effect (β= .42) and indirect effect (β=.45) of design elements on satisfaction were statistically significant, and the 95% confidence interval (BootLLCI=0.29, BootULCI= 0.59) did not include zero, demonstrating a significant partial mediation role of user experience. (Conclusions) This study verifies the structural relationships among design elements, user experience, and satisfaction in neighborhood parks for older adults and clarifies the mediating mechanism through which user experience links environmental perception to emotional satisfaction. The findings indicate that improving environmental quality, providing adequate rest and social spaces, creating multifunctional activity zones, and harmonizing natural elements can effectively enhance user experience and daily life satisfaction among older adults.
