Abstract
This study investigates the effect of conditional promotion(e.g., conditional e-coupon) which is commonly utilized by many companies and prevails recently. This study presents a shopping value and compulsive buying tendency as moderating variables and examines the moderating effect of these variables between the effort level and the usage intention of conditional e-coupon. Despite the importance of its value, previous research on conditional promotion is still limited. Especially, the shopping value and compulsive buying tendency are critical variables which account for the consumer behavior in a various ways; however the effect of effort level on usage intention of e-coupons depending on these two variables is not well verified. In relation, this study examines the differential effects of shopping value and compulsive buying tendency on the consumer’s response in order to compliment the limitation of previous research. Specifically, in case of consumers with utilitarian shopping value , the usage intention of an e-coupon is higher when the effort level of using coupon is low (vs. high). On the other hand, for those with hedonic shopping value, the effect of effort level on usage intention is not statistically different. Next, the second experiment shows that in case of consumer with low compulsive buying tendency, the usage intention of an e-coupon is higher when the effort level of using coupon is low(vs. high). On the other hand, for those with high compulsive buying tendency, the effort level does not statistically affect the usage intention. This study has its theoretical contribution in that it cornerstones a research of usage intention of conditional promotion and opens a new research area for time cost by examining the effect of effort level(time cost) in the context of conditional promotion. Moreover, it provides a practical guideline on which group of consumers is less susceptible to the time cost and suggests that strategically targeting this kind of group would be effective for a firm to implement the conditional promotion activities effectively.
